UNT Battle Flag

Scholarship Overview

TAMS will award early-research scholarships to a limited number of incoming students in accord with the “rolling admission” protocol. We shall seek to place successful Early Research applicants in UNT-based research labs for a 9-week residential summer session, with weekdays devoted to lab research. Early summer research students will also engage in educational seminars and R&R interaction with other research students.

Early Researchers will interact with other TAMS students, UNT graduate students, postdocs, and Principal Investigators (PI). Early researchers will thereby receive a significant head start in (1) adjusting to life at UNT, (2) understanding how to navigate a research lab, (3) learning methodology, contributing to their fields of study, and (4) experiencing the social atmosphere and protocols of a research lab and of a residential environment. The residential living and research experience will feature a $4000 scholarship to help early-research students meet expenses.

Program Requirements

Students must participate in the full 9-week summer research experience. Students who receive an Early Summer Research placement, will be enrolled in a one-credit, Pass/Fail class. Early Researchers will complete somewhere between 35-40 hours of researcher per week.

Students selected for Early Summer Research will receive a contract outlining the expectations and regulations pertaining to the research experience. It is recommended that students review this contract carefully to ensure they are able to meet the requirements. Full contracts and instructions are sent to those awarded the Early Summer Research Scholarship.

Application

The early summer research application review process typically spans from December to March, which may be subject to change. During this time, we will review applications and invite a select number of applicants for an in-person interview on a rolling basis.

We shall seek to match students who have successfully interviewed with available and appropriate labs and professors. Final acceptance is provisional, relative to the ability of TAMS to locate a research mentor for the student.

Please note that all applications will remain in consideration until the selection process is complete. All Early Summer Research applicants will be notified of their final application outcome, via an email, in the spring.

Please direct questions regarding the application process for Early Summer Research to Lily.King@unt.edu.
