Chemistry 2+2 with Grad Track

This curriculum outlines how a TAMS student can seamlessly transition from TAMS to earn a baccalaureate degree and then a Master of Science degree in Chemistry within 5 years. This plan assumes that a TAMS student begins in Math 1710 Calculus 1, but a student who begins in MATH 1650 Precalculus can easily "catch up" and by consulting a TAMS Academic Counselor who can adjust the plan.

Students may elect to change pathways ONCE at the end of their first semester but before the first day of class of the second semester. This excludes the Music track as the College of Music requires a student to audition during the TAMS admissions process. Changing tracks may require students to complete Summer courses between their first year and second year at TAMS in order to "catch up" with the requirements of the new pathway curriculum. Students considering a change in pathway MUST meet with their Academic Counselor and MUST receive approval before enrolling in courses for their second semester.

The BS in Chemistry requires a minor in either mathematics, computer science, physics, biology, geology, or materials science. While the plan shows 5 courses, please see below for a number of additional courses for each minor.

  • Mathematics (2 additional courses, both advanced)
  • Biology (3 additional courses, including 2 advanced)
  • Computer science (6 additional courses; could be reduced by following the TAMS Computer Science track)
  • Geology (6 additional courses)
  • Materials science and engineering (6 additional courses)

To be a competitive applicant for Grad Track, students should have a sustained program of undergraduate research. This can be achieved by selecting CHEM 4900 (research hours) as electives in the plan below. Students will also be required to pass departmental graduate proficiency exams at the graduate level to follow this plan.

General Mathematics and Science

The General Math and Science curriculum is the original "TAMS curriculum" that provides students with a strong foundation in STEM courses leading to degrees in biology, chemistry, physics, and related fields and sub-fields.

Electives

Generally, TAMS students who maintain at least a 3.2 GPA are able to take electives after their first semester, provided that their course load does not exceed 19 hours.
