3-Step Closedown & Checkout Plan

The end of the school year is approaching. In order to make this closedown as painless as possible we have developed this site to help you in your endeavors. To be checked out of your room, we expect your bathroom and room to be so clean that it looks like you never lived there. You may have to spend several hours of hard manual labor to accomplish this task. Don't expect to be checked out until your room has met the standards of the staff.

Step One - Signup for a Checkout Day and Time

On Wednesday, May 3rd you can sign-up for a checkout day and time at your wing meeting WITH YOUR RA.  Figure out when your finals are prior to signing up.  Communicate with your parents as to the day and time you are signed up to check out.

Your roommate must be present at your check-out appointment, so make sure you pick a time that works for both of you. It is most convenient if you check out together.  The rationale for both roommates present is to eliminate confusion on what is to be cleaned by whom and who is responsible.  With both residents present, clarity is improved.

Step Two - Clean Your Room and Bathroom REALLY, REALLY WELL!
Suggested supplies to purchase or bring from home:
  • Plastic scrub brush - it'll help bust grime Sponges Glass cleaner
  • Adhesive Remover (Goo Be Gone)
  • Non-abrasive cleaner/soap scum remover (Soft Scrub with bleach)
  • All-purpose cleaner (409, Pinesol)
  • Toilet bowl cleaner
  • Toilet bowl brush
  • Mildew Remover
  • Soap Scum Remover
  • Mr. Clean Magic Eraser!
  • Do not Use: Steel Wool or Abrasive cleaners (Comet)
Supplies available from the front desk to check out:
  • Paper towels
  • Vacuums
  • Brooms
  • Dust Pans
  • Mops
  • Trash bags
  • Buckets

Suggested Cleaning Timeline (You are responsible for cleaning your area but will split any common areas in your room with a cleaning contract):

Day 1: Take down all posters, pictures, knick-knacks, and other decorations and pack them away. Spackle and paint any holes in the walls. Both items will be available at the front desk.

Day 2: Pack up any clothes you won't be wearing from now until you move out. Clean off your desk and pack school supplies you won't need for the rest of the week.

Day 3: Condense the things you've stored in drawers, packing what you don't need for the next few days and cleaning out the drawers as you go.

Day 4: Condense the things in your bathroom cabinets/shelves, packing what you don't need for the next few days and cleaning the cabinets/shelves as you go.

Day 5: Scrub the tub/sink/floor and dry it off to make it look like new. Sweep your room for dust bunnies.

Day 6: Move out boxes and disassemble any furniture you brought with you. Make sure you put back any furniture you put in storage (bed frame, mattress). Check the bathroom for toiletries and throw your remaining clothes in a bag. Strip your bed sheets and do a final sweep of the room checking for odds and ends. Mop your room and bathroom floor.

Step Three - Move Your Stuff and Checkout

Students must be completely moved out at the scheduled checkout time - this also means nothing (boxes, clothing, cleaning supplies, etc.) in the hallway. Students with anything in the hallway will not be checked out.

Remember: Your roommate must be present at your checkout – if they aren’t present then your checkout will be rescheduled.

If you need to change your checkout time, please let the RA assigned to check you out know about the change and they will schedule you at a time that is convenient for them.

If your miss your checkout time then you will need to reschedule with the RA assigned to your checkout – don’t do this, you might get charged a $75 improper checkout fee.

You and your roommate both need to sign your room inventory sheet accounting for the condition of everything in the room and turn in your room key to the RA checking you out.

Juniors are expected to be checked out of their room on or before 5/11/2023. Check out processes will "pause" on Thursday, May 11th for the TAMS graduation at 3pm and then resume at 7pm to 10pm. Due to Graduation, Seniors are allowed to check out of their rooms the next day between 8am-12pm (if needed). We anticipate seniors staying with their families on the Thursday night after graduation, even if their checkout time is on Friday, May 12th.  McConnell Hall will close Thursday night and no students will be allowed to spend the night in McConnell.

TRAVELING DURING FINALS

If a student desires to travel the weekend of May 5-7 - the student needs to have a travel option still available and parents need to call and approve the details (the same process as previous travel requests). Students traveling that weekend must return on Sunday, May 7th.  Late or inaccurate submissions will not be approved.

Can a student check out and commute for finals?  YES
Which day and time should be discussed between parents and student.

Sign up and follow all the procedures to check out of McConnell - turning in the room key at the front desk will be the final step.
Once a student is checked out, the student can no longer spend the night in McConnell.  Visiting during the day is fine but NO overnight stays will be permitted.
Once a student checks out of McConnell Hall, the supervision and responsibility of the student returns to the parents.  PARENTS PLEASE pay attention to this detail.
