Student Summer Activities

  • Christian Blanton of Bedford is working at Bonnie and Clyde’s pools and spas. Later in the summer, he will be traveling to Colorado for a mission trip with his church choir. Shortly after he returns, he will be traveling to Russia for another mission trip.

  • Brandon Chow of Coppell is spending his summer conducting research that investigates the effects of oil exposure on hatched mahi mahi under Dr. Warren Burggren in his developmental physiology lab at the University of North Texas. In his free time, he plays ultimate frisbee with other TAMS students at UNT and in Plano. Brandon is also practicing table tennis in preparation for collegiate table tennis tournaments in the fall. 

  • Sarah Freeman of Carrollton is interning at a hospice care office, handling record management and other office duties. She is also studying Arabic in preparation for a full immersion, four-week-long camp in Minnesota, which she thoroughly enjoyed attending last summer. In her spare time, she is working on college applications and interviews, as well as preparing for a Macroeconomics CLEP test in the fall that will bring her one step closer to pursuing a major in health economics.

  • Kelsey Hedges of Frisco is working at Brookielynn’s Bungalow, spending time with her boyfriend, and trying to figure out which colleges to apply to.

  • Maggie Hill of Dallas went to see the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado.

  • Emelyne Hoang of Saginaw started her summer off by spending time with her 3 sisters and traveling to California for a wedding. As a TAMSformers Robotics executive, Emelyne is currently focused on developing the Robotics website, which has led to her tinkering with Angular Material HTML and CSS. She is also making time to study for the new SAT and SAT Subject Tests. 

  • Carolyn Huynh of McKinney spent a couple of weeks in Tanzania shadowing a hospital, learning about their healthcare, hiking, and snapping pictures of zebras and elephants.  She is currently working in a lab at UT Southwestern, investigating the expression of the Kiss1 receptor in healthy and depressed human postmortem brain tissue.  On the weekends, she is figuring out how to parallel park in hopes of obtaining her driver's license soon.  She is looking forward to visiting Seattle and Maui towards the end of August to spend time with her family.

  • Vidula Khanduri of Colleyville is auditing a class on Middle Eastern Political Science at UTA, preparing arrangements for the TAMS A Capella group, and starting college apps so she has less to do in the stressful senior fall semester. She's also figuring out how to dance and spending lots of time on music.

  • Isheta Kumar of Forth Worth is traveling and spending time at hospitals this summer. She is visiting Spain and Portugal with her family on a guided tour. She also plans on visiting her family in Los Angeles and touring the city. Additionally, she plans on visiting family in Pennsylvania, spending time in New York City, and visiting Washington D.C. When she is not traveling, she spends most of her time shadowing doctors and working in her mom’s office at Texas Health Huguley Hospital. She is also training for her first half marathon, the Disneyland Half Marathon, which she will run at the end of summer. 

  • Margarita Chavez Smith was born in Jamay, Jalisco, Mexico and now lives in Denton with her family. She is married with six children, and has five grandchildren! Margarita has worked at UNT since 2016, and joined the McConnell Hall family in 2019. She enjoys attending church, spending time with her family, and has talent with interior decorating.

    Margarita’s advice to residents: “Continue to dream, and reach for your goals”.
