FAQ's
How will I know when you receive all my application documents?
After you have submitted your online application, call 1-800-241-8267 to confirm receipt of your counselor and teacher evaluations, report cards, SAT scores, security affirmation form, and any other required documents. We cannot check your status until your application has been submitted, since we must match documents to your application. Until you confirm receipt, do not assume your application is complete.
Should I apply for Early or Regular Decision?
Under either scenario, applicants may be admitted, not admitted, or wait-listed.
- Applicants admitted during Early Decision receive admission letters weeks sooner than Regular Decision admits.
- Candidates wait-listed during Early Decision will be automatically held over for reconsideration during Regular Decision. In the meantime, these candidates will have opportunities to enhance their files with new honors, grades, awards, or references.
- Regular Decision wait-listed candidates will have much less time to improve their profiles before final decisions are rendered.
How much does the SAT count? What about teacher and counselor references, transcripts, and interviews?
No pre-determined weights are assigned to any file elements, and no formulas or computer programs are used to select students. Successful applicants must submit competitive scores and transcripts, although no specific GPA or SAT score guarantees entry. Candidates are evaluated case-by-case and it is not possible to calculate odds of admission without reviewing the entire file. Admission will be based not only on scores and transcripts, but also on your apparent motivation, maturity, career interest, interviews, algebra assessment tests, teacher and counselor evaluations, and behavioral record.
What if I attend a small school that does not offer pre-AP or Honors classes?
Candidates from schools not offering pre-AP will not be penalized, but they must perform well in courses that are available. Pre-AP, AP, and Honors courses are not prerequisites since they are not offered at every school statewide. Students from larger schools that do offer pre-AP courses should take advantage whenever schedules permit. Candidates should take the most challenging courses available for sophomores at their schools.
Are home-schooled students admitted?
Yes, but they may require additional screening and interviews.
May I apply as a non-U.S. citizen?
Students (and Parents) who have Permanent Resident Cards or have received the I-797 Notice of Action approving permanent residency are eligible for TAMS admissions consideration. Some students with select visa types are eligible to domicile in Texas and are also eligible for TAMS admissions consideration (list of Visa types & eligibility).
If I cannot attend Interview Day, could I be interviewed by phone or by other special arrangement?
Sorry but no. On Interview Day, candidates not only interview but also take important algebra tests. Our process would be slowed significantly, and an undue burden would be placed on our small staff if we had to make special arrangements to accommodate schedule conflicts. Exceptions may be made only in rare cases involving illness or accident. Check the application calendar and make note of interview dates well in advance. There may be some flexibility as to which Interview Day may be assigned, but dates other than those already scheduled on the application calendar will not be entertained.
